When people are asked where they go to get more work done it’s often somewhere quiet and away from other people. It could be the study at home, the summer house in the garden or a Starbucks down the street. It’s rarely the office. Why is this? Well, mainly due to distractions.
Jason Fried talks at TED for about 17 minutes on why working from the office is not always the most productive means of working.
How to be more productive at work
Work is very much like sleep in the sense that it works in cycles. You need to go through the light phases of sleep to get to the most beneficial deep stages of sleep. If you are woken up you have to start all over again from the beginning. The same is true of work and distractions. Have you ever been into a job and you get distracted by the telephone or an email which then throws you off course? You lose your momentum and have to start all over again? Well an average day in the office can often be like this. If you are looking to be more productive at work then you need to lose the distractions.
Watch this short presentation by Jason fried and you may just become that little more productive tomorrow at work.
